Kodachrome – now extinct
They hysteria rages on. The digital bigots will no doubt cheer the news of Kodak’s demise. Artists will mourn it.
Film is dead, long live Film.
Kodak is blaming technology for its bankruptcy. This is just nonsense. Kodak long ago, became arrogant, aloof, and out of touch with reality.
Lots of blame to go around
There are a number places to lay the blame; Government policy, company policy, technological change, the internet. That’s not what caused Kodak to fail.
Like other large firms who were protected from competition by the Government, Kodak did not have to innovate to survive. Now they are paying the price for that protection.
If you never have to get better, you only stand still. Those who have to get better to survive will get the chance to take you out. That is what is happening.
Internet Hastens Demise of Bad Companies
Because the internet allows people to see what others have, or don’t have; people no longer have to accept less. Companies are forced to innovate or die.
Much has been made that film is dying because no one needs prints anymore. This is just wrong. People still want prints, they just get them from digital images. Kodak, used to make paper and the chemicals for processing those images. Not anymore.
Most people assume that because there is so much digital content availible, film must be dead. Wrong. Professional photographers, especially art photographers, still use film to capture images. The movie industry still uses film as well. Contrary to what some say, film is still a better image capture mechanism than digital. Digital has not caught up, yet.
Blame Management
Kodak is blaming Apple, HTC, and other companies for dragging out litigation over patents that Kodak owns. That may be true, but why does that matter? Because Kodak was desperate for income, and patents are a good way to get them.
I am sure most of you can see why Kodak if failing. Bad management is to blame.
If you go to the Kodak store, you will find little Print materials that do not require machines from other companies. This is just bad management.
Fuji Film Company is what Kodak should have been. Kodak did not understand what business it was in.
Kodak was too slow to change its business model. They only have themselves to blame for the slow demise of a once great company.
